From a moment of crisis to a career of purpose, Rachael’s story highlights the profound impact of supporting mental and behavioral health.
As Suicide Prevention Month comes to a close, we want to reflect on the power of hope and the importance of connecting with one another. This month is about more than statistics and resources; it’s about real people and their stories. Today, we’re honored to share Rachael’s story—a powerful reminder that a single moment of connection can change everything.
For Rachael, her teen years were a time of deep darkness. Amidst struggles with domestic violence, teen dating violence, and sexual assault, she felt a profound sense of loneliness. She describes her suicide attempts as a “cry for help” that went unanswered. The pain was real, and the weight of it became too heavy to bear.
When Rachael was 18, she made a plan. It was a Friday night, and she was ready to carry it out. As she prepared to leave her house, she was stopped in her tracks by her mom. It was a moment that, in retrospect, seemed divinely orchestrated. For years, her mom and stepdad were never home on a Friday night, but on this night, her mom was. She looked at Rachael and said something completely out of character: “Rachael, I don’t know what I would do without you.”
Her mom’s words broke through the darkness. Instantly, Rachael started to cry and told her mom everything. The plan she had for that night was replaced with a new path—one toward the hospital and professional help.
Rachael believes her mom was home that night for a reason. It was, as she puts it, a “divine appointment” that saved her life. It wasn’t just the words, but the presence of someone who showed up at the exact moment she needed them most.
Today, Rachael is not only a survivor; she is an advocate.
She tells her story every chance she gets, believing that open conversation is the key to prevention. She teaches a domestic violence class at her local crisis center and hopes to speak in schools to educate kids on teen dating violence and what to look for, so they don’t end up in dangerous situations as adults.
Rachael’s message to anyone struggling is this: “I am a survivor. It’s okay not to be okay, but please, don’t stay there. There is help. You are worthy of help. You are worthy of living. You are worthy of love. Please don’t give up on yourself. I am an open book and am here if you need to reach out.”
Rachael’s story reminds us that we all have a role to play. Sometimes, being there for a colleague, a team member, or a client is enough. A simple gesture or a moment of grace can change the trajectory of a life. As we step into a new month, let’s carry the lessons of Suicide Prevention Month forward—to be more present, to listen with empathy, and to build workplaces where connection and well-being are at the core of our success.
