It’s hard enough to find, hire, and retain good employees. According to a recent Inc. 500 CEO survey, 50% of leaders surveyed said attracting and retaining skilled employees was the biggest challenge they faced.
A New York Times article mentioned the challenges veterans face in the job search during their transition back to civilian life. One of the barriers many veterans face is the attitude of employers on hiring veterans. Many employers believe veterans, especially those in the front lines, bring emotional baggage with them. They are concerned about the impact of PTSD and other behavioral issues that might manifest in the workplace if they hire a veteran.
What many employers overlook, however, are the transferable skills veterans bring to the table.
Here are 4 reasons why employers should hire veterans:
They’re trainable. Because of their intense training during boot camp, veterans have a propensity to take direction well. They are also capable of learning quickly, and do what they are told to do. Veterans are used to a structured environment, and will follow instructions to a tee.
They’re team players. The military could not survive without teamwork. Military recruits not only have to get along with everyone; they also have to work alongside others with different backgrounds, personalities, and skill levels. Military team members rely on the other members in their units, including following the proper chain of command.
They have leadership skills. Veterans have been trained to lead their platoons on missions, many of them dangerous. You cannot find a civilian who is more experienced in delegating and motivating teams.
They provide a social mission for your company. Doing the right thing shows prospective customers your company cares about giving back. Businesses can add a social responsibility element when they make it part of their mission to hire veterans. A 2013 study revealed more than 90% of consumers would switch to brands that support a cause, all other things being equal. What’s a better cause than employing people who risked their lives for our freedoms?
